Help! What to paint the kitchen?

With all of the work we have to do on the house and it's going to be a few years before we can remodel the kitchen. My mom volunteered to paint the cabinets for us, but I'm struggling with what color. Do we go bright and bold or boring and grey? The counters are a bizarre navy blue and muddy white granite mix. We need to decide by Saturday. What would you do if you were stuck with this kitchen for 3-5 years?

  1. First, Congrats! Your house is amazing. I wish we had houses like this available where I live. Second, I'd take down the uppers to open up the space. When we first moved into our house we did that and it was amazing what a difference it made. We painted the kitchen cabinets black and it looked great! White is always a good option and you can accent it with great colored walls and or backsplash. You might see if the moulding can be taken off the cabinet and drawer faces for a more modern look. You could also go bright with the cabinets, maybe a gright green, then white on the walls. So many options you have!

  2. Congratulations on your new home. With pale grays in the rest of the house, you could go with a yellow and white color scheme. Pale yellow cabinets and white walls, or vice versa. The blue counters would be okay for your timeframe.

  3. Wow, so exciting! Congratulations! Can't wait to follow along. I love a good vicarious reno! Looks like the floors are actually tile? Not linoleum, and if so pretty fabulous. The trouble is in trying to tie the blue counter and floors together for a while. I think the easiest would be white or just off white to minimize the counters...plus you will see the kitchen from other rooms of the house by the looks of it, and you may not want too much colour until it can at least co-ordinate with itself ;-) I love the idea of talking down that one bank of uppers to see into the gorgeous family room!
